Abstract : In nature, the majority of medical record comprises of free narrative text. However, medical narrative is still significant obstacle to develop effective electronic medical record. Current challenges for computerizing medical narratives are threefold: to fulfill the reusability of structured representation, to preserve the habitual practice of clinicians who have been familiar with paper-based charts, and to minimize the burden of data entry within acceptable range. Dealing with the above challenges, this study developed an ontology-based controlled natural language which enables clinicians to record medical narratives without additional effort. It is expected that cost of recording medical narratives might be considerably reduced and data of good quality can be easily collected.
